2017 Detachment Convention

Syracuse, NY was host to the 43nd Annual Sons of the American Legion Detachment Convention, held July 19 to July 22 at the Double Tree Inn  by Hilton. 

Over 100 members from the Sons, from all across the State attended, as well as special guests National Commander Jeff Frain, and Leading Candidate for National Commander  2017-2018 Danny Smith.

The Sons held their annual Golf Tournament to benefit the Child Welfare Foundation on Wednesday afternoon at Greenview Country Club in nearby West Monroe, NY., raising nearly $1,500 for CWF.

The Convention formally began with a Pre-Convention Executive Committee Meeting on Wednesday evening.  On Thursday Committee and Commission Chairmen provided their reports for the year, as well as announced the Squadron winners in various levels of competition.   A Meet the Candidates Luncheon was held on Thursday as well, with additional Committee and Officer reports given after lunch.

Elections for 2017-2018 Officers were held on Friday morning, with the Induction of Officers being held at a special luncheon.  The  day concluded with participation in the Convention Parade in Downtown Syracuse Friday evening.

The newly elected Detachment Officers were bused, then introduced to the Department of New York American Legion at the On-Center Friday morning, with the Sons meeting concluding at the DoubleTree with all appointments announced later that morning.

Special Award Presentations

A special presentation was made at the Detachment Convention by Legislative Chairman and Leading Candidate for National Commander 2018-2019 Greg "Doc" Gibbs, to David Perry.  David is a member of Charles E. Westcott Squadron 173 in Bath, Steuben County, and has been a member of the Detachment's Legislative Committee for many years.  The plaque awarded was in recognition of his dedication and years of service both locally and Nationally to the Committee, and to Legislation that concerns our Veterans and their families.  A Proclamation from Congressman Thomas Reed was also presented to David and read by Doc Gibbs, recognizing his hard work and dedication as a member of the Legislative Committee in New York State.

 

An award presentation was also made to a member of the Detachment of New York at the Thursday evening State Dinner of the American Legion Family at the Syracuse Sheraton.  Department of New York American Legion Adjutant James Casey presented the 2017 Department Adjutant's American Legion Family Award to Gabe Cinquegrana.  Gabe is a member of Squadron 256 in Canandaigua, Ontario County, and is the Detachment Public Relations Commission Chairman and Webmaster.  The Award was presented "In Recognition and sincere appreciation of outstanding service and assistance which contributed to the advancement of the American Legion Family Programs."  This is only the second year that the award has been given.  In 2016 Gabe received the Charles B. Rigsby Award, a National Sons of the American Legion Award by the VA&R Commission, as the National Volunteer of the Year.
